Yes, tell him what he is good at...even extreme skeptics can't argue with your feelings. He probably has a firm opinion of himself that is far too entrenched. Don't have to brown nose, just tell him the truth, with focus on the lighter side. Some people won't address a problem, but they will build on what they perceive as a strength.
