after the lysis of the red cells the hemoglobin is broken down into its smaller components in the blood, one of which is "heme" which is further converted to bilirubin (yellow pigment) in the blood....and if there is a large amount of bilirubin aculated in the blood (faster than your body can compensate) you will appear jaundiced (yellow color of the skin, usually appears in hepa patients because the lack of conjugation of bilirubin in the liver)
