Can I insert an electric fireplace in the wall?

We currently have a very ugly builtin shelf in our living room. Once we remove the shelf we'll have a floor to ceiling hole. We plan to have the wall fixed, but would like to add an electric fireplace to the room and are not sure if inserting it in the wall is safe?
