I am utterly computer illiterate so please help me?

I do not know anything about computers other than knocking my laptop on,off, opening word etc and getting on the internet. When my internet is not working I have to get my flatmate to sort the problem. Is there any good websites out there or books that could help me learn about computers and how they work? regards good people
